Incredible comet!!!
Hale-Bopp is around mag 1 with 5+ degrees of tail. Strong moon light. HB is visible
to the naked eye with a few degrees of tail in traffic with oncoming headlights.
Tail is visible at the Shady Grove Metro Station Sodium Mercury vapor photon cauldron.

Did a little wide angle imaging. Nothing to write home about. Hale-Bopp is around mag 1
with 5+ degrees of tail. Strong moon light. Near-Live Comet Watching System

Imaged Hale-Bopp with my brother Dave. Used his 8" SCT and my CCD to probe the
psuedonucleus. Go the Near-Live Comet Watching System and
click the "view images by date" button and then look up Varros Team or George Varros under
02/23/97. Hale-Bopp is around mag 1, tail about 5 degrees to the naked eye with strong
moonlight.
02/17/97 05:00 - 06:00 AM EST
Imaged Hale-Bopp 400mm f/f 5 second exposures.
With the naked eye the nucleus looks stellar around m1=2.0 before considering the coma.
Tail visible about 5 degrees Naked eye. 7 degree tail with 10x50
Binos. Nuc area had hints of gold and blue color in 8" f/6 Dob at 48X. Very much the same
as 02-16-97.
02/16/97 05:00 - 06:00 AM EST
Imaged Hale-Bopp 400mm f/f 5,10,15 second exposures. Comet much
brighter than 02-01. M1 ~1.0 With the naked eye the nucleus looks
stellar around m1=2.0 before considering the coma.
Tail visible about 5 degrees Naked eye. 7 degree tail with 10x50
Binos. Nuc area had hints of gold and blue color in 8" f/6 Dob at 48X.
02/01/97 05:45 AM EST
Imaged Hale-Bopp 400mm f/f 5,10,15 second exposures. Comet was very
bright around M1=2.0, wide wedge like tail about 3.5 deg long in 10x50 Binos.
